     What is a search engine and why should you care? A search engine is where you go to find something on the Internet. You’ve more than likely already used one, such as Google, AltaVista, Excite! or Yahoo, for example. Did you know that there are literally thousands more?

     But how do they know to list your site? Well, you must have specially placed HTML information coded on your pages called “Meta Tags”. These meta tags include all the information related to your site (keywords) as well as a description of your site. One way that a search engine can find your site is by sending out an automated information gatherer, called a “spider”, which looks for the presence of these meta tags and reads their contents.

     It does anyone little good if these spiders add your information to the “bottom of the list”, and your site appears after hundreds of others. That’s where submitting your stats to search engines comes in.
Every search engine has its own criteria for adding submissions and there are thousands of engines out there! And if you over submit your site, they will automatically ban your site from their listings altogether!
